The 5th Installation Ceremony of the Rotaract Club of Faculty of Law, University of Colombo


The 5th Installation Ceremony of the Rotaract Club of Faculty of Law, University of Colombo was successfully held on the 23rd of September at the Senate Hall of University of Colombo.

The event was graced by a number of distinguished invitees including the Chief Guest for the occasion, President of Rotary Club of Colombo East, Rtn. Babu Rajmohan, the Guest of Honor, the Dean of Faculty of Law, Ms. Indira Nanayakkara, Secretary of Rotary Club of Colombo East, Rtn. PHF. Saifudeen Adamaly, Co District Committee Chair, Past DRR. Rtn.PHF. Pirrsanth, Youth Services Chair, Rtn.PHF. Selvarajah Maherakanth, and the District Rotaract Representative, Rtr. Mohamed Husni. More than 25 fellow Rotaract Clubs were present at the event.

The Installation Ceremony commenced with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp by the dignitaries. The Sergeant -at- Arms, Rtr. Kanchana Wijeratne then called the house to order. This was followed by the Flag salutation, the Rotaract Invocation and the Rotaract Four way test read by Rtr. Zaitun Hakeem. The Rotaract Song was then sung by the gathering. The attendees were thereupon welcomed by Project Co-Chairperson Rtr. Namya Gunawardena.

The Secretary's Report for the year 2015/16 was presented by Rtr. Shalanka Weerasinghe followed by a short video which highlighted the dynamic projects carried by the club throughout the past year. Following an interesting description of the club’s movement and achievements during the year 2015/16, the Immediate Past President Rtr. Hiran Geeganage concluded their Rotaract year with warm wishes for the President and his Board of Directors for the year 2016/17.

The President for the year 2016/17, Rtr. Vikum Jayasinghe, was then introduced to the gathering with a short video. The inspiring speech of the President reflected his spirit as a leader and his passion to change society for the better by extending a helping hand to those who need it the most. Further he presented the theme for the year ‘One for all, All for one’. Next on the agenda was the introduction of the Board of Directors for the year 2016/17.

The dignitaries at the head table including Rtn. Babu Rajmohan, Past DRR. Rtn. PHF. Pirrsanth,Rtn.PHF. Selvarajah Maherakanth and DRR.Rtr. Mohamed Husni praised the work done by the club in the previous year and wished the new Board a successful year. Tokens of appreciation were presented to the dignitaries who attended the ceremony in gratitude for their presence. Rotaractors from the Rotaract Clubs present at the ceremony then extended their good wishes to the new Board.

This was followed by the Secretary Rtr. Piumi Madushani expressing her heartiest thanks to everyone who cooperated to make the event successful. President Rtr. Vikum Jayasinghe then terminated the Installation Ceremony for fellowship and refreshments.

Matha: Awareness on Post-partum Depression

Leading up to the birth of a child, everyone prepares expectant mothers for it. One thing they don’t prepare them for is Post-partum Depression. Therefore, we took it upon ourselves to do so. While it is a completely common phenomenon, it is rarely discussed in the common context. The stigma surrounding mental health can be seen as the main reason for this. The Rotaract Club of the Faculty of Law University of Colombo and the Rotary Club of Colombo East together with the Arka Initiative conducted a workshop for expectant mothers and the staff at the Kethumathi Maternity Hospital in Panadura. Post-partum depression or past-natal depression is a mental health issue which arises from up to a few days to a few months of giving birth. GreeNation: The Firstever Rotaract Rainforest

Transcending stereotypical notions, the Rotaract Club of University of Colombo ventured to launch Project GreeNation with the intention of growing and maintaining the first ever Rotaract Rainforest in the country. GreeNation was not a mere tree-planting project; rather it looked at growing a rainforest over one acre of land in Rakwana and maintaining it until the ecosystem could survive on its own. GreeNation aims to produce enough pure air for over 1000 people to consume and is a step that is assured to sustain for generations while becoming a home for animal life. It will truly become yet another wonderful element of the Mother Nature. GreeNation was laid out under several phases. The first phase was to clear the paths and make the land ready for plantation.
