Peer Power : Workshop Series & Conference

Peer Power is a joint professional development project, done by the Udecide Sri lanka, in
partnership with Rotaract Clubs of Faculty of Law of University of Colombo and Colombo
West, dedicated to promote amicable dispute resolution culture in Sri Lanka through mediation.

It was comprised of two phases; a series of workshops and the mediation conference.
As the first phase of the project, mediation workshops were conducted at the Mahanama College Colombo, Wycherly International School, Visakha Vidyalaya Colombo, Royal College Colombo, Ladies College Colombo, Royal Institute Senior School, St. Benadicts College,
Colombo, University of Colombo, University of Peradeniya, Cfps Law School and the Teacher
Training School in Narahenpita. Further, another workshop was conducted for 350 prefects in Kandy.

The Peer Power Conference, which was Sri Lanka’s first ever conference on mediation, was the second phase of this project. The Conference was conducted with the participation of school students, teachers, undergraduates and professionals at APIIT Law School under the patronage of Mr. Sunil Hettiarachchi, the Hon. Secretary of the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training where experts and professionals in the field enlightened the audience on the subject with a series of speeches followed by a panel discussion.

We, the Rotaract Club of Faculty of Law of University of Colombo played a cardinal role in
conducting the workshops and organizing the Conference, which included assisting UDecide in coordinating and finalizing the venue and the resource persons that were required to conduct the conference, while carrying out public relations through posting videos and graphics about the project on every social media platform. Further, the videos that were shown on the Conference
were also designed by the members of our Club.

By and large, the conducted workshops and the Conference contributed in raising awareness on
mediation as an effective amicable dispute resolution method, generating a dialogue on the need to establish effective dispute resolution mechanisms and empowering the participants to focus on mediation methods in resolving disputes.
