The Cluster: Habitat for Humanity
ROTARACT CLUSTER PROJECT – 2017/18
Rotaract Club of Faculty of Law along with the Rotaract clubs
of Colombo East, College of Chemical Science, Kandy, Male, Nallur, Negombo and
Alumni of University of Moratuwa – namely the ‘Cluster 7’, successfully carried
out its cluster project for the year 2017/18. The preliminary arrangements of
the project started in the month of June 2017 and the project was implemented
during January 2018.
Our project, namely ‘The Habitat for Humanity’ was an initiative
to address the environmental concern by achieving certain United Nations Sustainable
Development Goals (SDG) of the year. The project was carried out in three
phases, each addressing different SDGs and also each covering different aspects
of the environment.
Under Phase one, we provided a water purification system to
Pusiyankulama Vidyalaya in Anuradhapura as a part of eradicating chronic kidney
disease prevalent in the area. This phase addressed SDGs such as ‘Clean water
and sanitization’ and ‘Good health and wellbeing.’ Phase two of the project was
an initiative for incentivizing of waste management. This phase included collection
of several types of waste such plastic, polythene etc. and the management of
such collected waste was handled by Abans (Pvt) Ltd. Through this phase we were able to address
SDGs such as ‘Responsible consumption and production’ and ‘good health and
wellbeing.’ The third phase of the project focused on providing access to
selected farmers in Anuradhapura to fruit exporters database of National Fruit
Research on Development Institute. Through this phase of the project we were
able to address SDGs such as life on land, decent work and economic growth and
industry, innovation and infrastructure.
The main objective of our project ‘Habitat for humanity’ is
not only to provide benefits to the selected communities but also to create
awareness among people to come forward and be informed and concerned about the
environment that we live in.
