You Care

The Rotaract Club of Faculty of Law, University of Colombo as a community service has undertaken to promote health and wellness, surrounded by different levels of community trough project “YOU CARE”. Even though the educational and health service systems provide awareness about “how an individual could maintain a balanced mental and physical structure throughout his or her life”, there is a tendency of world population getting caught to various types of diseases rapidly because of their lack of attention to health. Moreover these individuals, who suffer from illnesses, sometimes face to dangerous situations due to non- recognition of that illness in the initial stage or even recognized but having no supplementation to treat because of their socio - economic circumstances. Therefore as the young Rotaractors, we initiated this project to develop awareness among people about health care and also help them to succeed in difficult situations. This project consisted of 3 phases.

Phase 1

“DROPS OF HOPE” – The annual blood donation campaign organized by the Rotaract Club with the aid of National Blood Bank, in order to help the patients in need, by making it easier for the people living within Colombo area to donate blood was held on 15th of February 2017 at the Ceylon Hall of Faculty of Law, University of Colombo.
As the preparation for the phase, we met the National Blood Bank and reserved a date for the event. Then we promoted the campaign by affixing posters around the university and publishing flyers on social media and inviting people to participate.
At the blood donation campaign, we were assisted by a crew of 10 members from the National Blood Bank. The hopeful donors were first tested to ascertain their possibility of donating blood. The medical professionals engaged in the blood collection of those eligible to give blood, Meanwhile, the Rotaractors provided food and drink for the donors and provided necessary attention and aid. A total of 75 people participated in the event. The donors and the medical crew of the National Blood Bank should be greatly appreciated for their part in making Phase 1 – Drops of Hope a successful one.

Phase 2

“HELLO LIFE” – The mental and physical awareness programme conducted by Dr. Danuka Padmaraja - Public Health Medical Officer, Base Hospital Homagama ([MBBS] [Diploma in Child Psychology)  for Grade 6 – 11 students of  Ambalangoda Sriripathi Vidyala, with the aim of  enlightening these underprivileged children on health care was held on 17th of February 2017 at the school main hall.
As preparation for Phase 2, the Co-chairs of the project sent a request letter to the Principal of the school requesting permission to conduct this programme in Ambalangoda Siripathi Vidyalaya.  After receiving a positive response from the school, one of the co-chairs met the principal and made further arrangements. Further, the Co-chairs met the resource person, Dr. Danuka Padmaraja and confirmed his participation.
On the day of the event, the Rotaractors went to the school and made further preparations for the programme. An interactive session was conducted by the doctor. The children, teachers, Principal as well as the Rotaractors asked questions from the doctor and he clarified them with reference to the value of mental and physical health of a child. At the end of the programme,  the Rotaractors distributed milk packets among the children, and a First Aid Box with medicine was gifted to the school. The resource person was presented with a token of appreciation.
The Co-chairs are thankful for the cooperation of the Principal and the staff of Ambalangoda Siripathi Vidyala, Dr. Danula Padmaraja and the student from grade 6-11, for making the Phase 2 - Hello Life a successful event.

Phase 3

“Little Hope” –  The donation of essential medicines for the Children's Ward of Maharagama Cancer hospital, in light of the “International Childhood Cancer Day” (which was held on 15th of February). The Rotaractors spent the morning in the hospital, spending time with the children suffering from cancer, and giving them hope. The programme was held on 25th of February 2017.
As for the pre-arrangements of the phase, Mrs. Manel Airrapperuma, a Hospital Committee Director of the Maharagama Cancer Hospital was contacted.
As per her directions, the Rotaractors acquired essential medicines for the Children’s Ward to be gifted as donations. Additionally, the co-chairs arranged 55 gift packs with some necessary essential items for the kids in the ward.
On the day of the event, the Rotaractors gathered at the Cancer Hospital and distributed their gifts among the children while donating the medicines to the ward. They also made future aspirations to help the Cancer Hospital in various projects.
Phase 3 – Little Hope was accomplished due to the sincere support of the whole hospital including Mrs. Manel Airrapperuma and those who donated funds.

The main objectives of this project were to increase the awareness of the society regarding mental and physical health issues and also to provide some support to overcome those who suffer from such illnesses. Without confining this project to the university community the Rotaractors emphasized the need to introduce such rights to the various parts of the community. As a result, the project was initiated with 3 phases targeting school children, cancer patients and their families as well as the university community.

The cognizance created among the society would help them take care of their own selves as well as their loved ones. The idea of aiding patients in need was also communicated to the public in the hope that people take positive action to help others in vulnerable positions.
