Soundscope: Phase 1
Soundscope is a project launched by the RCFOL, University of Colombo in partnership with the Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind in Ratamalana, with the hope of recognizing, empowering and actively engaging the deaf and hard of hearing community in the social and economic processes within the Island and beyond.
The first of the 3 phases of mission Soundscope was completed at the end of two enthralling workshops on the 6th of November 2016, with the avid participation of approximately 50 participants in total.
The workshops were facilitated by Mr.Rajith Madushan, one of the few qualified Sign Language interpreters in Sri Lanka who is also a teacher at the Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind in Ratmalana- an eminent institute which offers quality education from pre-school to secondary level to deaf individuals free of charge.
Mr. Rajith Madushan kick-started the first workshop on the 25th of October by inviting the audience to close their eyes as he sang a tuneful song, at the end of which he asked what they felt. The participants responded by saying that they were able to focus on the emotion of the song and feel the lyrics more. The instructor added that even with the loss of one of our senses, we were still able to enjoy the music, whereas someone deaf would not have such straightforward access to said enjoyment.
Further explaining the temperament of the deaf community to the empathetic audience he educated them on some of the reasons for a person to be born deaf or hard of hearing and possible precautions one could take to lessen its chances.
He then commenced the first lesson by training the participants to sign the English Alphabet which the participants grasped swiftly. With the assurance that everyone had sufficiently mastered it, he spelled several words and requested the participants to interpret them accordingly. He also got few participants to sign their names after few seconds were given to all to practice signing their names.
Confident with the performance of the participants he moved on to basic introductory phrases such as “what is your name?” and “where do you live?” that would come handy in a conversation.
After training each and every participant to sign their hometown he then worked through numbers, colours and family members maintaining the participants’ interest with interesting anecdotes behind words and phrases. His engagement with the audience was strong, he was quick to repeat whatever was necessary and to respond to various queries regarding the technicalities of Sign Language.
To add to the temptation of the audience he demonstrated a conversation between him and the volunteer from the Ceylon Deaf School who joined him that day and gave the opportunity to the audience to narrate their conversation which proved to be challenging yet interesting.
As the two hours drew to a close, Mr. Madushan ended the programme by singing the National Anthem and signing along with it. Rtr Sajini Elvitigala made a speech noting how important it is to challenge misconceptions by bringing awareness to worthy causes such as this in order to affect real change.
The second and final workshop was held on the 6th of November with Mr. Madushan returning to teach Sign Language. He began the session by revising what was learned in the previous workshop. Next, each of the participants was asked to name a verb, which was translated into sign language and a sentence using said verb was also taught. The enquiring audience continued to name verbs and phrases requesting the instructor translate them.
At the end of clarifying all queries of the participants, he took to the next step of preparing the participants for the second phase of mission Soundscope by teaching to sign simple children’s songs such as ‘Nil Ahas Thale’ and ‘Ran Wan Patai Samanalayo’ which the participants hope to sign along with the students in the Ceylon Deaf school during their expected visits. This part of the workshop proved to be both hugely enjoyable and instructive.
In addition, the 5 Buddhist precepts and the Catholic prayer offered to Our Father were also taught.
Drawing towards the end of the workshop, the concluding exercises were both a challenge and a test for the participants in which the instructor got a volunteer from the audience, Rtr Sajini Elvitigala to give a speech as a teacher of a school while he conveyed it in Sign Language simultaneously. Next Rtr Vikum Jayasinghe was asked to deliver a speech as the President of the Rotaract Club, which was also translated by Mr. Madushan in real time. Meanwhile, the rest of the participants were made to indulge in the task of identifying new signs while he signed the speeches of the two volunteer participants.
Satisfied with the performance of the participants he concluded the workshop with the announcement that anyone who wished to further their knowledge of Sign Language could follow the Diploma conducted by the Maharagama National Institute of Education and by once again singing and signing the two songs learned.
The sessions proved to be an unconditional wealth of knowledge, satisfaction, and delight. It was made successful by everyone who showed up, eager to learn a skill too often neglected. As the curtain closes on Phase 1 of Soundscope, the Rotaractors are already in motion to implement the next stage, hopeful that their efforts will do much to reduce social inequality.

මෙම වැඩසටහනෙහි පළමු අදියරට සමගාමීව පසුගියඔක්තෝම්බර් මස 25 වනදා සහ නොවැම්බර් මස 06 වනදාසංඥා භාෂාව ඉගැන්වීමේ විශේෂ වැඩමුළු දෙකක් කොළඹවිශ්ව විද්‍යාලයේ නීති පීඨ සිලෝන් ශාලාවේදී පැවැත්වුණා.එමවැඩමුළු සඳහා රත්මලාන බිහිරි විද්‍යාලයේ ආචාර්යවරයෙකුමෙන්ම සංඥා භාෂා පුහුණු උපදේශකවරයෙකු වූ රජිත්මධුෂාන් මහතා තම සම්පත් දායකත්වය ලබාදුන්නා
පළමු දිනයේදී රජිත් මධුෂාන් මහතා විසින් වැඩමුළුවට සහභාගීවී සිටි පිරිසට ශ්‍රවණාබාධිත හා කථන ආබාධ සහිත පුද්ගලයින්ගේ චිත්තානුභූතීන් ගැන කරුණු පැහැදිලි කල අතරඔවුන් සමග සන්නිවේදනය පහසු කරගැනීම සඳහා සංඥා භාෂාවෙන් ඉංග්‍රීසි අක්ෂර හෝඩිය පණගැන්වෙන අයුරුදපැහැදිලි කළා. දිනය පුරාවට විවිධ වචන, විවිධ ගම්වල නම්,සතියේ දවස්, පාට වර්ග , සතුන් වර්ග ආදියෙහි නම් සංඥාභාෂාවෙන් ප්‍රකාශ කරන අයුරු ඉගෙනීමට පැමිණ සිටි පිරිසට අවස්ථාව සැලසුණා. වැඩමුළුව තවත් ප්‍රායෝගිකඅයුරින් සිදුකිරීම සඳහා ඔහු විසින් දේශනා ශාලාව වෙත කැඳවාගෙන ආ රත්මලාන බිහිරි විද්‍යාලයේ ආදී ශිෂ්‍යයෙකුසමග අදහස් හුවමාරු කරගැනීමටද පුහුණුව ලබමින් සිටි පිරිසට අවස්ථාව ලබාදුන්නා. සංඥා භාෂාවෙන් ශ්‍රී ලංකාජාතික ගීය ගායනා කිරීමෙන් අනතුරුව පළමු දින වැඩමුළුව නිමාවට පත්වුණා.
දෙවන දිනයේදී පුහුණු උපදේශකවරයා විසින් පසුගිය පාඩම්මතක් කරමි වැඩමුළුව ආරම්භ කල අතර පැමිණ සිටි පිරිසටතම කැමති ක්‍රියා පදයක් සභාවට ඉදිරිපත් කිරීමට අවස්තාවසලසා දුන්නා.පසුව ඔහු එම ක්‍රියා පදය සංඥා භාෂාවට පෙරලූඅතර අදාළ ක්‍රියා පදය භාවිත කරමින් වාක්‍යක් සංඥා භාෂාවටවර නගන ආකාරයද ඉදිරිපත් කළා.අනතුරුව රත්මලාන බිහිරිවිද්‍යාලයේ සිසු දරු දැරියන් සමග සන්නිවේදනයේ පහසුව සහඔවුන් සතුටු කිරීම සඳහා, පැමිණ සිටි පිරිසට 'නිල් අහස්තලේ'සහ 'රන්වන් පාටයි සමනලයා' යන ගීත සංඥා භාෂාවෙන් ගායන කරන ආකාරයද රජිත් මධුෂාන් මහතා විසින්ඉදිරිපත් කරනු ලැබුවා.මීට අමතරව පන්සිල් පද පහ සහ කිතුනු ආගමේ යාඥා කිහිපයක්ද සංඥා බසින් සිදුකරනආකාරය ඔහු විසින් පැහැදිලි කළා
කොළඹ විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයීය නීති පීඨ රොටරැක් සංගමයේ සභාපති විකුම් ජයසිංහ සොයුරා විසින් වැඩමුළුව මගින්ලබාගත් දැනුමට සහ ප්‍රයෝගික පුහුණුවට ස්තුතිවන්ත වෙමින් සිදුකල ස්තුති කතාවෙන් අනතුරුව වැඩසටහන ඉතාසාර්ථක අයුරින් නිමාවට පත්වුණා.
Soundscope திட்டமானது கொலும்பு பல்கலைகழக சட்டப்பீடத்தின் ரோட்டராக்ட் சங்கம்,ரத்மளானை இலங்கை காதுகேளாதோர் மற்றும் பார்வையற்றோருக்கான பள்ளியுடன் இனைந்து,காதுகேளாதோரை இனங்கண்டுகொண்டு, அவர்களை தேசிய மட்டுமல்லாது சர்வதேச ரீதியில்சமூக மற்றும் பொருளாதார செயற்பாட்டில் ஈடுபடுத்தி வலிமை மிக்கவர்களாக மாற்றும்எதிர்பார்புடன் ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டதகும்.
இந்தப்பணியின் முதலாவது கட்டம் 2016 நவம்பர் 6ஆம் திகதி இரண்டு கண்கவரும் பட்டறைகளுடன் நிறைவுப்பெட்ட்றது. இதில் ஏறத்தாள 50 பங்கேற்பாளர்கள் மிகவும் ஆர்வத்துடன் பங்கெடுத்தனர்.
இப்பட்டறைகள், சைகை மொழி உரைபெயர்ப்பாளர்கள் சிலருல் ஒருவரான திரு. ரஞ்சித் மதுஷான் அவராளல் நடாத்தப்பட்டது. இவர், முன்பள்ளியிளுருந்து இரண்டாம் நிலை கல்வி வரை காதுகேளாதோருக்கு இலவசமாக தரமான கல்வியை வழங்குகின்ற ரத்மலானையில் அமைந்திருக்கும் இலங்கை காது கேளாதோர் மற்றும் கண் பார்வையற்றோறுக்கான பள்ளியின் ஆசிரியர்களுள் சிறந்த ஒருவர்.
திரு. ரஞ்சித் மதுஷான் அவர்கள் 25ஆம் திகதி அக்டோபர் மாதம் நடைபெற்ற முதல் பட்டறையை இனிமையான பாடலொன்றை பாடி ஆரம்பித்தார். இப்பாடலின் போது பார்வையாளர்களை தமது கண்களை மூடமாறு கூறி, பாடலின் இறுதியில் இப்பாடலின் பற்றிய அவர்களது உறர்வுகளையும் கேடரிந்துகொண்டார். பங்கேற்பாளர்கள் பாடலின் வரிகளை உணர்ச்சிபூர்வமாக உணர முடிந்தது என பதிலளித்தனர். நாம் நமது ஒரு இயலுனர்வை இலந்த போதிலும் இசையை அனுபவிக்க முடிந்தது அதேசமயம் காது கேலாதொருவரால் இசையின் இவ்வின்பதை அணுக முடியாது என பயிற்றுவிப்பாளர் எடுத்துரைத்தார்.
மேலும், செவிடு சமூகத்தின் குணத்தை விளக்கியவாறு ஒரு நபர் செவிடாக அல்லது காது கேட்பதில் பிரச்சனை உடையவர்களாக பிறப்பதற்கான காரணங்களையும் அவற்றை இயன்றவரை தவிர்ப்பதற்கான முன்னெச்சரிக்ளயும் கற்பித்தார்.
பங்கேற்பாளர்களுக்கு ஆங்கில எழுத்துக்களை சைகைக்காட்ட கற்பித்து முதல் பாடம் தொடங்கியது. இவற்றை பங்கேற்பாளர்கள் வெகுவிரைவிலேயே பற்றிப் பிடித்துக்கொண்டனர். அனைவரும் இவற்றை கற்றுக்கொண்டனர் என்ற உறுதியுடன் பல வார்த்தைகளை கூறி அவற்றை சைகைகாட்டுமாறு வலியுறுத்தினார். தங்கள் பெயர்களை சைகை காட்டி பயிற்சிப்பெற சில நொடிகள் வழங்கப்பட்டதின் பின்னர் ஏதோ சில பங்கேற்பாளர்கலுக்கு தமது பெயர்களை சைகை காட்ட வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தது.
பங்கேற்பாளர்கள் செயல்திறனில் நம்பிக்கை கொண்ட அவர், "உங்கள் பெயர் என்ன?"மற்றும் "நீங்கள் எங்கு வசிக்கின்றீர்?" போன்ற உரையாடலில் அதிகமாகப்பயன்படுத்தப்படும் அடிப்படை சொற்றொடர்களை அறிமுகப்படுத்த நகர்ந்தார்
ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் ததத்தமது ஊர் பெயர்களை சைகை காட்ட பயிற்சி அளிக்கப்பட்டது. பின் இலக்கங்கள், நிறங்கள், குடும்ப உறுபினர்கள் தொடர்பானவார்த்தைகளை கற்பிக்கும் போது சுவாரஸ்யமான நிகழ்வுகளை பகிர்ந்து கொள்வதின் மூலம் பங்கேற்பாலரின் ஆர்வத்தை தக்க வைத்துக்கொண்டார்.
பார்வையாளர்களின் உற்சாகத்தை தூண்டும் வகையில், இலங்கை காதுகேளாதோர் பாடசாலையை சேர்ந்த தன்னார்வ ஊழியர் ஒருவருக்கும் தனக்கும் இடையே ஒரு உரையாடளை கொண்டு செயல்விளக்கமளித்தார். இவ்வுரையாடலை விளங்கிக்கொள்வது பார்வையாளர்களுக்கு சவாலானதாகவும் இன்னும் சுவாரஸ்யமானதாகவும் காணப்பட்டது.
.இது போன்ற உண்மையான மாற்றங்களை கொண்டுவருவதற்கெதிரான தவறானஎண்ணங்களை எதிர்கொள்வதில் உள்ள சவால்களை பற்றிய உரை ஒன்றை ரோற்றக்டர் சஜினி எல்விடிகல நிகழ்த்தினார்.
இரண்டாவதும் இரிதியுமானபட்டறை 2016 நவம்பர் மாதம் 6ஆம் திகதி திரு. மதுஷான் சைகை மொழியை கற்றுக்கொடுப்பதோடு ஆரம்பித்தது. முந்தைய பட்டறை சரிபார்க்கப்பட்டப் பின் பங்கேற்பாளர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவரிடமும் வினைச்சொல் ஒன்றை பெயரிடமாறு வேண்டுப்பட்டது. தொடர்ந்து, அச்சொற்கள் சைகை மொழிக்கு மொழிபெயர்க்கப்பட்டதோடு, அவற்றை பயன்படுத்தி வாக்கியங்களும் அமைக்கப்பட்டன. ஆர்வம் கொண்ட பார்வையாளர்களை பல வினைசொற்களையும் சொற்றொடர்களையும் கூறி அவற்றை மொழிபெயர்க்க கோரினர்.
அனைத்து பங்கேற்பாளர்களின் கேள்விகளையும் தெளிவுபடுத்தியதன் முடிவில், Soundscopeபின் இலக்கை அடையும் இரண்டாம் கட்டமாக “நில் அஹசே தரு” “ரன் வண் பாடய் சமணலையோ ” போன்ற எளிய குழந்தை பாடல்களை சைகை மொழியில் கற்பித்தார். பட்டறையின் இந்தப் பகுதி மிகவும் அறிவுருத்துவதாகவும் சுவாரஸ்யமானதாகவும் காணப்பட்டது.
மேலதிகமாக, 5 புத்த கட்டளைகளையும் எங்கள் பிதாவிற்கு வழங்கப்படும் கத்தோலிக்க ஜெபமும் கற்பிக்கப்பட்டது பட்டறையின் இறுதியில் நடைபெற்ற முடிவான பயிற்சிகள் பங்கேற்பாளர்களுக்கு ஒரு சவாலாகவும் பரீட்சையகவும் அமைந்தது. இதில் பார்வையாளர்களின் தன்னார்வ பங்கேற்பாளர் ரோற்றக்ட்டர் சஜினி எல்விடிலயை பள்ளி ஆசிரியர் என்ற தலைப்பில் பேசுமாறு கோரிய பயிற்றுவிப்பாளர் ஒரே நேரத்தில் அதை சைகை மொழியில் உரையாடினார். தொடர்ந்து, ரோற்றக்ட்டர் விகும் ஜயசிங்க ரோற்றராக்ட் சங்கத்தின் தலைவர் என உரையாட்டும் போது திரு. மதுஷான் அதே நேரெத்தில் சைகை மொழியில் மொழிப்பெயர்த்தார்., அவர் இரண்டு தன்னார்வ பங்கேற்பாளர்களின் உரைகளையும் சைகை மொழியில் உரையாடும் போது மீதமுள்ள பங்கேற்பாளர்கள் புதிய அறிகுறிகளை கண்டறியும் பணியில் ஈடுபடுத்தப்பட்டனர்.
பங்கேற்பாளர்களின் செயல்திறனில் திருப்தி கொண்ட அவர், சைகை மொழி பற்றிய தங்கள் அறிவை மேம்படுத்த விரும்புவோர் மகரகம தேசிய கல்வி நிறுவனத்தால் நடத்தப்படும் டிப்ளமோவை பின்பற்ற முடியும் என்று கூறி அவர் கற்றுக்கொடுத்த இரண்டு பாடல்களைபாடியவாறு சைகை காட்டி பட்டறையை நிறைவு செய்தார்.
இவ் அமர்வுகள் அறிவு, திருப்தி, மற்றும் மகிழ்ச்சி போன்ற நிபந்தனைகளற்ற செல்வத்தை வழங்கியது. இதில் கலந்துக்கொண்ட அனைவரின் ஆர்வமும் ஒத்துழைப்பும் இந்நிகழ்வின் வெற்றிக்கு வழிவகுத்தது. Soundscope கட்டம் 1 நிறைவடையும் போதே ரோட்ற்றக்டர்ஸ் சமத்துவமின்மையை குறைக்கும் எதிர்பார்ப்புடன் அடுத்த கட்டத்திற்கான தங்கள் முயற்சிகளை ஆரம்பித்தனர்.
