Nanබා 2019

The award winning club service project jointly organized by the Rotaract Clubs of Faculty of Law of University of Colombo and Chunnakam, “Nanba ‘19” Connecting Cultures, was held for the second consecutive time from the 5th to 7th of April 2019.

Planning the project commenced with fixing a date to conduct the project and then, the relevant details were shared on social media platforms to encourage attendance. Upon conclusion of registrations, the transport and accommodation facilities were planned out. The agenda and the necessary equipment to
conduct the project were planned later with the joint efforts of both the Clubs.

Twenty-two Rotractors from the Rotaract Club of Faculty of Law were on board the momentous journey to Jaffna in the YaalDevi and celebrated the Sinhala and Tamil New Year the following day with the Rotaract Club of Chunnakam in a spirit of friendship and fraternity. Several traditional new year games
were conducted, prizes were distributed to the winners, an enjoyable few hours were spent and new friendships were forged in this year’s Nanba.

The primary objective of this project is to facilitate a mutual understanding and respect towards the other cultures that reside in our motherland. The most apt instance to build such cohesion is through the
celebration of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, a cultural festival jointly celebrated by two predominant
communities in Sri Lanka. Through this, our Rotaractors both from the North and South learnt from each
other and forged bonds of friendship that would last long beyond the event.

The New Year celebrations in Jaffna helped develop skills of team work, respect and mutual
understanding among both club members of various communities. The project was therefore significant in
rekindling past friendships and creating new bonds among Rotaractors across the country.
Nanba also provided the opportunity for many Rotaractors of our club who were new to the movement to
experience the spirit of Rotaract, which would encourage member participation and retention within the
club in the future years.
