Annual Club Trip

“We travel not to escape life but for life not to escape us”

With this outlook the Rotaract Club of the Faculty of law, University of Colombo embarked upon an unforgettable journey to the Kingdom of Ruhuna. The picturesque city of Hambantota, the stupendous irrigation network from ancient civilizations and the historical significance of this magnificent city not only awed us, it further reminded us of our rich heritage and culture. While this experience increased our knowledge and widened our perspective on life, it further strengthened our fellowship as it was a great representation of all batches.

On the 23rd of October 2015 before the first flush of the morning we assembled at the university grounds to make a start on our journey. Although most of us felt drowsy and lurched straight out of our beds, the familiarity and warmth of our fellow colleagues and the homely atmosphere of the university immediately revived us.  Many would agree with me when I say that our bus was transformed into a cafeteria as we broke into laughter and song as soon as we took off.

Our first stop was the mystical Ussangoda National park. The breathtaking landscape encompasses a certain ambience due to its historical importance as it is believed to be the area where King Ravana landed his legendary peacock chariot. While some were astounded by its secrets, some enjoyed the fresh sea waves. Thus we were able to see the beauty of Mother Nature at its finest.

The Safari experience at the Bundala National park was without a doubt the highlight of the trip. The park is internationally renowned for its beauty and diversity. Our eyes were round in wonder pretty much the whole way through. Although most of us had seen elephants a countless number of times, seeing this majesticcreature in its natural habitat stunned us. It was a beautiful moment and the pictures, without a doubt,do not do justice to sense the majesty of these creatures. This firsthand experience with nature can be defined as the perfect getaway from the busy schedules in our day to day life. This trip definitely let us recharge our “batteries” by disconnecting us from our regular lives.

As the sun began to set that evening our journey, too, came to an end. However I speak for the entire Rotaract Club when I say that this trip was filled with laughter, excitement and complete madness. Finally, it is with utmost pleasure that I conclude that the trip is definitely one of the most enjoyable projects carried out by the club so far and the experience would be cherished by those who were a part of it even in time to come.
